Seriously though, I cleaned many records with the VPI and had an occasional pop, especially with those I bought in the late 60's and 70's.

I just recleaned an '70's LP which I had pops even after VPI cleaning & stored in a MOFI sleeve -- unless that VAC Renaissance SE phono has a 12AX7 pop remover, there isn't one now.

I'm impressed (or you may say Bob's just deaf).

Bob - how's the noise level with the Autodesk? Can you clean LPs and listen to your system in the same room? My biggest objection to the non-US RCMs is the much-too-high noise level.

Glenn -- I lived with the VPI 16.5 for around 15 years or so and when I first used it for extracting solution off the LP -- it reminded me of a Hoover canister vacuum cleaner I bought. The VPI is down right LOUD and up there with that Hoover I owned. I just accepted the noise level of both (and I hated the Hoover).

With the Auto Desk you can definitely listen to music and clean records in the same room -- you may not hear the intimate background details; but, with the VPI you couldn't really hear much at all unless the volume was increased.

Comparing the two, I'd say realistically, the Auto Desk is 30-35% the db level of the VPI 16.5. I can carry on a conversation with the Audio Desk running in cleaning and drying modes, whereas with the VPI, it was nearly impossible & futile.

Bob - thanks. Have a spot about 12' behind my speakers that would be just place for it. Add in my 6' in front of the speakers and it might not make any noise to speak of from my listening position. Add a couple of inches of foam on the two nearest walls and it should work. Think I know what my next purchase will be (dammit ).

Not just regular intervals, the operative word is frequent intervals. With an Audiodesk (I have one) I would not go more than 10 records without changing the water. That gets a little expensive.

Your experience tells me Audio Desk is doing one hell of a job.

Ultrasonic cleaning results in undesirable residue which must be dealt with at some point and the frequency of solution renewal cannot be dialed in to any specific number of cleanings as many factors are in play. It's wise though to be cognizant of the number of cleanings and periodically check the filter element as it's an easy item to view to see how much contaminant the machine has been removing. When in doubt, drain & refresh.

Regardless though, thorough cleaning is what I bought it for in the first place and it seems to be holding up to its side of the bargain. If responsibility requires me to buy distilled water and concentrate more often, then so be it. That's life & part of the deal.

As for the contaminated material, I'll dump it on the weeds.

My experience tells me the water is a lot dirtier than imagined. My experience also tells me the cleanliness of the water cannot be gauged by looking at the ADS filter. It's great that it has a filter, better than units without one, but it is a sponge with relatively high porosity, which it has to have because the water is not pushed/pumped through it. The rollers will also pick up dirt - always good to compare a used roller with a new white one.

It's a nice unit, I've had one going on four years, and Werner Gläss continues to improve it, but the water gets dirty pretty quick. I think because it is hard to tell how dirty the water is (many factors are in play) that setting a number of records frequency for changing the water eliminates the guesswork.

I replaced my water after 100 LPs. I also pulled the filter and rollers. The 100 LPs cleaned we either new or previously clean with NG Minipro2. I dumped my water through four layers very fine, very bright, white cheese cloth. No dark discoloration was noticed, but could see some particles of filthiness. Also compared the used rollers to new rollers, and reinstalled the used rollers after cleaning them with mild soap and rinsed well. I did change the filter although it really did not need it. My AudioDESK Pro is a fine us cleaner
