Question McIntosh MT5 turntable, thoughts on this...

I been thinking about this MT5 turntable last few days...

Who's design of turntable did McIntosh use? Clearaudio? Rega? as I do not know whos tonearm is used...

Is sound quality of this equal to other turntables in same price range or we just paying for McIntosh looks in this case?

Might as well use the phono input on C2300

Dan

Dan,
The MT10 is a Clearaudio platform. I'm not sure what the MT5 is based on, but I really like its looks a lot. I think it's another modern classic from McIntosh. It would look stunning next to your C2300 for sure. If you are looking for a plug and play TT this would be a good choice. Sure you might be able to get more bang for the buck, and everyne here will step in with their favorites. But it would take a lot more fiddling and research on your part to get going.

I can't answer the question, but the MT5 looks much, much better than the MT10. I'm glad that Mac fans now have an aesthetically pleasing TT option to put in their Mac systems.

I own an MT10, so, obvously I like the way it looks. I personally like the looks better than the MT5. Everyone that has seen my MT10 also likes the looks, including audiophiles and non-audiophiles..

In general, the MT5 does not look as massive as the MT10. As an owner of the MT10, I am really impressed with the huge platter and magnetic floating bearing. I am under the impression that this technology makes more of a difference that people realize, ie, the TT is quieter, less snap, crackle, pop. . I have also tested the tonearm tracking of the MT10 with test records. Its performance is remarkable, ie. having to use the highest decibel track to get any tracking distortion at all.. It will be interesting to see if the less substantial platter of the MT5 and the tonearm tracking can match the performance of the MT10. I would not bet on it. Of course the price point of the MT5 is much better, but, I bought my MT10 "barely used", so, I paid closer to the MT5 retail price, than the MT10 retail price.. Anyway, for sure, you should get a much better cartridge in the MT10 (Tailsmann)... I cannot see how they could afford to put that cartridge in the MT5.
