Default C-J Pre and HT Bypass

A potential buyer for my ET-2 asked a question about HT Bypass, and since I never used my C-J pre...or any 2-channel pre for that matter...in an HT configuration, I'm not sure about the answer.

Common sense tells me...if you have an HT pre/pro, you feed your multi-channel source (BD et al) to that first in the chain. Then you have the pre-out from the pre/pro, feed the L/R to the C-J pre as a source (all the other multi channels go directly to a multi-channel amp). In HT Bypass mode, the C-J would apply no gain to the multi-channel sources L/R, and simply bypass it to the multi-channel amp unaltered. Do I have it?

So my potential buyer's real question is this: by any chance, will the C-J bypass like this...by default...with the unit turned off/standby? Thanks

You Have it right about how the bypass works. The preamp has to be on and bypass has to be activated. I think you have to select bypass from the preamp itself, I was told you can't do it from the remote.

Hi Everyone,

First post at AA. I've been active on AVS and AudioCircle. Found my way here researching CJ preamps and amps.

Hi CD - it was me that asked you about the bypass. Thanks for posting it here. Did you sell it? I'm leaning more towards the ET3 if I go CJ at this point. Still have this ease of use for the others in the house issue to work out. I think CJ preamps will power on with the last selected input. Can anyone verify that this would work with the bypass setting on a recent, remote controlled preamp?

The other issue is turning it on and off. I was led to believe that you could not from the remote, but I think you can by holding mute for two seconds. Is this true for most or all of the remote controlled models? If so, has anyone been able to make that work with a universal remote, either by learning or with a discrete code?

Thanks!

........Peter

Oh; small world Peter!

No, there she sits. Man...Audiogon sure ain't what it used to be.

I know both the ET-2 and 3 can be turned on and off at the remote (in the way you describe. Well...the ET-2 you hold mute to turn on; ET-3 just press mute while it's in standby).

Happy hunting!

I think the economy is taking its toll.

You just made my day regarding turning on the ET-3. If it is just a quick press, a universal should handle that fine. So how do you turn it off with the remote? Hold mute? Just tapping it while on would just mute it.

just checked my et5, it does remember bypass upon power up as well. (using CJ supplied remote) This was NOT always the case, CJ updated firmware as early on both ET3 and ET5 always powered up in "CD" input if I recall correctly.
