Alexis Badmaieff was the Chief Engineer at Altec and wrote their build guides at this time. I would start there... They can be found at:

I don't know where you are at but Cerritos College is recognized as having one of the best woodworking programs in the US. There may be other good community college programs in your area. There are also oftentimes local clubs that organize through places like Rockler and other woodworking specialty stores.

Wow. The walnut veneer on your custom 604s is gorgeous. Did you score that wood here in the bay?

Hi Grantray, No we purchased the 3/4" pre-veneered walnut from Austin Hardwoods when I was down in OC. But... I would't definitely not recommend pre-veneered wood after having gone through ti with two pairs. It leaves no margin for error, and we had some domestic and Chinese sheets mixed and one of the chinese sheets was delaminating on us we had to get more and then I still had a pre-cut panel start to separate and use hide glue and clamps etc.

I'd do 3/4 Baltic Birch and just veneer after you are happy with everything. I think it's worth it.

Default Good wood.

Yowzer. If you want the good stuff, with no backing, Goby Walnut is a lumber yard outside of PDX, and their veneers are amazing. Plus, they're happy to ship to the Bay. I especially love their single sheet stock. I just used a sheet of beautifully figured walnut to veneer the plinth I built for my Garrard 301. That said, the veneers can be very aged and brittle, so don't plan on using any of it for bends.

I just scored a nearly pristine set of 846As last week, and currently have them 19" off the floor on a slab wood bench. I'm not planning on building all new cabinets, because frankly, they sound insanely good as-is. I think I'm just going to build stands and call it a day for the foreseeable future.

Also, and I can't believe I'm typing this, the Altecs are better than my Devore O/93s. I absolutely love the apes, but the horns from the 846A are otherworldly. The O/93s definitely have the better bass, though. However, when I give the Altecs 35w of ultralinear juice from my little LM 211ia instead of 15w of triode, those 15s come to life almost on par with the the 10" SEACs in the Orangutans. I was shocked what that little bit of extra power did for the Altecs' low end.

If you can try making the stock crossover with better components spaced out on a board. It's definitely worth it...
