Congratulations, those are incredible amps. I can’t wait to see the pictures.

Do you mean 80 Watts per channel, i guess that is doable for new marketing pitch, just like MC 275 amp.

Just ordered Ref 160M to replace Ref 150. Black. Have not heard them yet but ordering sound unheard based upon raves by my fellow members here and the few reviews so far (esp Ken Kessler). I have never ordered a component without listening to it first but I am not worried in the least. Thanks to all who have commented including Metaphacts.

Got a pair of these (in black) about four weeks ago. They replaced a Reference 75SE. Paired with a REF6 pre. These are fantastic amps! For me, they get everything about right.

There is a new [very positive] review of the REF 160M by Alan Sircom @ HiFi+. It is always nice when the reviewers hear, in a product you’ve purchased, the very things you consider to make it special.

As someone who has owned a bunch of ARC gear over the past 35-40 years I have to say the Ref 160 IMO is the best looking Amp they''ve ever built. I chalk it up to being part of the Mcintosh group now.

Agreed. Follow Livio Cucuzza on Instagram and Facebook if you don't already.

Not to pick nits, but Livio was an integral and creative part of the group before McIntosh joined it. In fact I saw drawings (and more) of what was to become Galileo Series in Vicenza before Fine Sounds had purchased McIntosh.

The Galileo is a work of art.
Was told the chassis supplier just told them they couldn’t make it with the tolerances they wanted. So they had to bin a large percentage. They lost money for every Galileo they sold. Such a shame. But I’m glad the design cues from the Galileo lives on in the new Foundation and Reference series.

I must be in the small minority that hates the new design language. I dislike the faux-retro looks based on the original SP3A. I much prefer the laboratory equipment designs of the D79 era up till the Ref250SE. The build quality of the chassis and anxillary parts have gone south IMO - their chassis thicknesses are now thinner when compared to their models made up to the start of this decade (Ref75. 150 250, 5SE). They are also using cheaper looking shorter binding posts. The tan coloured PCB boards were also thicker and not as flexible as their current green coloured PCBs.
Having said that, their sonics have vastly improved over their past products. I just hate their looks. |
