I have tried the following basic tubes:
Electro-Harmonix 6550 EH- clean treble, bass is flabby at high volumes, indistinct at low volumes- I have also had reliability issues.
Svetlana 6550- sounded cold to me, didnt get my toes tapping- ok but nothing to write home about.
Sovtek KT88- excellent bass with strong dynamics. Treble a little shelved down compared with the Svetlanas, but this tube is my pick of this troika. It was also the cheapest!
I have been offered a quad of Groove Tubes (KT88) and used GEC Kt88s to try out over the next few weeks.

Rolling is fun!
My Gold Lion Reissues got a listening session last night and I was left high and dry. They were much better than the stock McTubes in my departed MC275V so maybe they need more break-in time in my MC60's.
