Schubert - Die schöne Müllerin
Christian Gerhaher & Gerold Huber
Qobuz 24/48

I listened twice to Fischer-Dieskau, and now again to this version.
This small comparison is hard work!

The sound is impeccable, it is of course a recording that is 55 years younger than the one above.
Gerhaher is equally very very good technically.
Huber also does a great job supporting this wonderful singer.
Fischer-Dieskau's voice maybe a little bit superior in absolute terms.
But I prefer this version.
It touches me more.
It provokes tears in my eyes more easily.
This goes right to my heart...

Listening to . . . Music to drink coffee with (?)

ADAGIO KARAJAN

Herbert von Karajan - Berlin Philharmoniker

A very old, but very beautiful collection of very gentle classical Adagios from very fine composers. Played quite well by a very good orchestra and conductor.

Nice music for relaxed listening.

Sonya Yoncheva - The Verdi Album
Münchner Rundfunkorchester, Massimo Zanetti
Qobuz 24/96

Very well done, but one album of Verdi is enough for today.

Dag Wirén - Sinfonietta - Serenade for strings - Symphony No. 3 - Divertimento
Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Rumon Gamba
via Qobuz

I like to try new things.
Wirén was a Swedish composer.
These works were written in the 30s, as reaction to the modernism of the 20s.
So here you have lighter and more entertaining music.
Good enough to buy the SACD?
Hmm, maybe.

Piotr Ilyich Tchaikowsky - Symphony No. 6 'Pathétique'
MusicAeterna, Teodor Currentzis
Qobuz 24/96

The beauty of this symphony is that it combines romanticism with power, lots of power, and depth.
I think this is very well conveyed by this recording (performance and sound).

Marin Marais - Pièces de Viole du Cinquième Livre
Wieland Kuijken - Kaori Uemura - Robert Kohnen
via Qobuz

The brother of our 'house musician' Sigiswald, is an equally great name in classical music.
On these recordings, he shows the reason why.
Very fine, subtle playing by all three musicians.

Default Beethoven: Missa Solemnis

This morning...

Beethoven: Missa Solemnis in D major, Op. 123
Laura Aikin (soprano), Elisabeth Kulman (alto), Johannes Chum (tenor) & Ruben Drole (bass)
Concentus Musicus Wien & Arnold Schoenberg Chor, Nikolaus Harnoncourt

A passionate performance by these forces, capturing the last public appearances by Hanrnocourt. The recorded sound is fine, but need to turn the volume higher than usual.

I agree about Gerhaher. His voice is also memorable on some of the Arte Nova discs earlier in his career.
