XP-20 to XP-30 preamp upgrade?
Hello guys.
I have an XP-20 with one year of use, in LIKE NEW condition and upgraded with a Revelation Audio Labs Cryo Silver Reference DB-25 Umbilical powercord. I read that the XP-30 is far better than mine but i hear for myself a lot of times some gear with amazing comments in the forums and when you compare this differences with the cheaper model this diferences are minimal. Please tell me, this is the same case or the differences are really big? I think that when you have gear of the highest level as an XP-20 preamp you need to invest a fortune for maybe a 5% better sounding electronics. Thanks friends Pablo |

I had the XP-20 in my system for 1 year and it was excellent. Honestly, the XP-30 is in a league by itself. Everything becomes so natural and smooth with a soundstage that astounded me. It is so darn musical. The Pass dealer in the U.S. lets you try it for a month, but be prepared to make out a check after you listen to it. I have had some great preamps over the years but this one is truly special.
Prices of new equipment are getting absolutely ridiculous. Living with the XP-20 for the rest of your life would be a sane choice - BUT - for the insane, the XP-30 is a wonderful choice. |

More bad news
I recently traded my Pass XP-20 in on an XP-30 and I can honestly say it has been the biggest step improvement I've heard in over 40 years of chasing the dragon. The XP-20 is a great preamp but the XP-30 really is that much better.
Start saving your lunch money, 'cuz when you hear one in your system there's no going back. Steve Z

It interesting that the output impedance of the XP20 is 1000 and 100 for the XP30 given the very high input impedance of 100,000 ohms for all Pass power amps.
Pass certainly does not apply the normal ratio of +- 10, the XP30 and any Pass power amp has an output / input impedance ratio of 1000. I just find it interesting that PASS is not consistent across all the preamp models in respect of output impedance. |

Pass point 5 series amps input impedance are 20k/30k. It got increased to 100k range for point 8 series. I don't think any amp company target to have a ratio of 10 in their design. It's too low. |
