Ah but which version? Original mono, stereo, or re-issue?

Thinking about it some more, I think the Sumiko reminds me of a Koetsu Rosewood Sig, but at a considerably better price. A full, rich, and sonorous but not overly-lush sound, with excellent bass detail, and smooth, sweet highs. Really very lovely. You could take my Michell/SMEV/Koetsu away, and say, "Stephen, you have to live with the P5 and the Pearwood", and I'd be very happy. More than happy....

Hi Bill,
For which record?
I have a second press of WGR and the 45 Quality Record Pressing/Analogue Productions as well.

Clap Hands is a Speaker's Corner reissue, though I also have an original. The Speakers Corner is better. Had an opportunity to pick up a mono of Clap Hands at Amoeba a few weeks back, but passed as I did not know if it was a "original" or folded-down from Stereo.

I didn't think so, and it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. From a business perspective, I totally understand that. Companies outsource engineering and manufacturing resources all the time; the company I work for certainly does. Even C-J's proprietary Teflon caps are made for them to their design specifications by an outside company.

Sumiko moving coil cartridges are original designs, not modified versions of somene else's design. While others have participated in design, notably Stirling Trayle (Spiral Groove), John Hunter has done the lion's share of the design. The designs have been manufactured in Japan by multiple OEMs over the years. In some cases entire cartridges are sourced. In others. proprietary parts are sourced from multiple suppliers and assembled by an OEM. I believe both the Pearwood and Palo Santos fall into the latter category.

As for who the OEMs are, I don't know. I guess I could find out if it really is that important.

Bill,

Could you tell me if the Palo Santos would be a nice match to the Rega RB1000 arm ( P9 TT) with the ARC REF PHONO 2 ? I'm thinking about buying one....

Thanks, Bill. Nah, it's not really important. I did find the booklet about the design and design choices fascinating, and it's clear from reading it that the designs are original Sumiko designs, and as I mentioined previously, a LOT of thought and consideration was put in the design and design choices made. As a scientist and Design for Six Sigma guy, I personally find that fascinating. I wonder if Stirling or John have ever used Design of Experiments in cartridge design.

Cheers,
Stephen

Jérôme,
IMHO, it would be sublime....

Funny you should post this, because as soon as I heard the Pearwood in the P5 last night, I thought of you and that you should get one or a Palos Santos for your P9. IIRC, Jeff Whitlock of A/V Solutions is also a big fan of the Palos Santos.
