Anyone using a digital stylus force scale?
Yesterday I ordered a digital stylus force scale. It is the first digital scale I have ever had for measuring stylus VTF. For many years I have used the Shure SFG-2 stylus force gauge, and it has been dependable, although it doesn't offer the accurate resolution of weight like a digital scale does.
I did a fair amount of research on digital stylus force scales, and discovered there are quite a few available, although when tested for absolute accuracy, many are close, but fewer are truly accurate to the exact one hundredth of a gram using test weights. One company kept coming up in tests as a very accurate scale, Jennings. I looked at a number of different digital scales from Jennings, and decided on the Jennings JS-CD-100. Its has a 100 gram capacity with a 0.01 gram resolution, a blue back lit LCD display, auto-off feature, and is uniquely installed in a CD case which makes storage convenient, and comes with a FIVE year warranty. Owning and using this digital scale will make phono cartridge tracking force adjustments extremely accurate. I am looking forward to its arrival. Anyone else using a digital stylus force scale?

Dan,
I've been using a digital stylus force gauge for several years and have found it to be more accurate and easier to use than any balance type mechanical gauge. The only problem I've encountered is losing the instructions and forgetting how to calibrate the thing. (I did eventually find the manual and calibration is a piece of cake). I occasionally switch cartridges and the electronic gauge makes set-up considerably easier.

Dan,
I am using the Ortofon balance type scale. I need to take a cue from you and step up to a digital model. |

Stephen.......I should have mine by Friday if I am lucky. It just shipped today by UPS. I'll post a little review of the scale with photos once I have it.

Thanks Dan. I've been busy lately and I will not be able to spend as much time on AA as I'd like for the next few months.
I'll check in from time to time to see what you guys are up to. |

Jdandy,
Are you satisfy with the Jennings digital scale? Did you compare the accuracy of the digital scale vs the shure mechanical scale? I have both scales and when I use the digital scale to measure the tracking force the tonearm skipps on the record. I use the 100g test weight to calibrate the scale but the tonearm still keep skipping, indicating that it is too light. But when I use the shure gauge to set the tracking force to the recommended value, the tonearm does not skip. When I use the digital scale to measure the same tracking force as measured with the Shure gauge, it shows that the tone arm is too heavy. On the other hand, the shure gauge indicate the the tonearm is too light when I use the measurement that the digital scale said is correct. I think the shure gauge is correct because the tonearm does not skip when I use its measurement for the tracking force. Please let us know your findings. |
