Do you think it would be possible to order a C70 alone and have the 70th anniversary engraving still?

My guess...the sold alone units won’t have the 70th engraving.

Yes they all will. The only difference is that it will not have the "Limited Edition" nomenclature and the numbering, ie: 57/70 of C70s sold as a part of the 70th Anniversary System.

You good gentlemen do realize, yes, that the absence or presence of a DAC in a Mac control preamp of an otherwise fixed design has no discernible effect on the preamp's basic sound? Its presence is an added convenience. I have found its inclusion useful. It can result in a different sonic presentation from the DAC one has on the "outside" and may render an alternate (and sometime more desirable) presentation of some CDs. One can compare at the touch of a button and choose the DAC that is more desirable for the recording at hand. Its inclusion also may enable one to buy a CD/SACD deck rather than a player, if so desired.

I suspect the preference for outboard DACs has little to do with intrinsic sound quality but more to with ease of servicing, flexibility and upgradibility from not having two units combined in a single deck.

Are you saying the DAC is easily removable from the preamplifier by the consumer for repairs/upgrading? Or does the whole unit need to be sent out when something goes on the fritz?
