Default Downmixing from Multichannel to Stereo. In Windows. How to get best results?

Hey!

As i'm considering a real Stereo-PreAmp with digital Inputs instead of an AV-Pre, because the sound should/must be better, i cannot do the Downmix in the Pre anymore. It must be done in Windows.
But...

How to REALLY get the best results? Which Softwareplayer and which exact settings?

What are your experiences?

Edit: It's for Movies...
