How does one get a mac to automatically change the output sample rate based upon what is being played. If I go to the audio midi set up, I can manually change it, but then it is set to that and doesn’t change based upon the file.

That’s why we use software like Audirvana or Amarra or PureMusic. There’s an app in the AppStore that does exactly what you want and nothing more. It’s called BitPerfect and it was the most affordable option.

I looked at BitPerfect but it appears to only work with iTunes. I’m not using iTunes but instead I’m using Qobuz via their website. The bit rate varies by album and I’m tired of changing the bitrate output from the Mac with the midi utility. Unless I’m misunderstanding the way the BitPerfect app works, I don’t think it will work with the Qobuz this way.

Yes it only works in iTunes. Then you will need Audirvana Plus - which has its own Qobuz engine

And it will automatically adjust bit rate? If so, I might have to give it a try.

It also optimizes the playback engine.

I’ve finally loaded all of my CDs onto my Mac mini and loaded Audirvana. I then loaded the Audirvana remote onto my iPad so that I can go headless on the Mac mini. I have to say that I am really disappointed with the app. It’s ridiculously slow to load my ITunes library on every start up and the Qobuz interface sucks. Also, I set my Mac mini to never sleep and never shut down but after I left for an hour and came back, nothing worked until I grabbed the keyboard and hit the space bar to wake up the Mac mini when it should have never gone to sleep. I’m beginning to think that a Mac mini music server was a big mistake. I’m just glad that it has so far cost me nothing but time because I was given the Mac mini by a friend that wasn’t using it and I’m in the trial period for the Audirvana software. I don’t see why people like this setup.

I’ve been using Roon on my Mac Mini and it works great.

The best way to use a macmini as a server is with Roon . I upgraded the ram to 16 gigs as well.

I’ll give roon a try. The ram is already at 16 gigs. Will roon automatically change the midi to match the file bit rate for hi res music? I know bit perfect does for iTunes but I want something that does it for qobuz. And does it allow for headless operation via an iPad?
