they are. They are very efficient too (91dbs), and I have tried with a low watt amps, no problem; but I think they need a lot of power to sound their best; not as much as B&W. They sound great with my mc452s and are killer for HT. We'll see what happens...

Default Aging thread, but Altec 14s...

Until I take the plunge on Shindo Latours (petites may be the fit for my room), I run my Aurieges / Haute Brion setup to $400 Altec 14's with upgraded crossover capacitors (Audience Auricap), and they have very nice tone, impact, immediacy, speed, and thanks to the Auricaps, detailed highs.

I feel that the 14's need subs though, so I supplement the low end with an REL sub set to a high frequency crossover and lowish volume (depending on the music at hand). My listening room is thick New Mexico adobe, and the bass reinforcement is wonderful (enveloping), but it can get boomy due to resonances at certain frequencies. It's really good though.

A more wallet-friendly non-Shindo high impedance/sensitivity speaker may be the next step on my speaker path. I've heard the O/96's with Line Magnetic gear at a show and a dealer, and they are supposed to be a fantastic match for my Haut Brion. I see a pair of Horning Eufrodite speakers on Audiogon for $9000 - the Eufrodite seem a great match on paper, and Highwater Sound pairs them with tube amps to frequent accolades, but I've never heard them with Shindo amps. A used pair of Tannoy Canterbury's show up on Audiogon for a bit over $12k, but I've read that Tannoy can be an acquired taste (but Altec horns probably are also).
