Gorgeous location! May I ask where? ... Oh, I see you are in Scotland. We must visit that part of the world before too long.

I'm on the Black Isle about 13 miles from Inverness, overlooking the inner Moray Firth.

To close the loop on this: I'm just wrapping up a home demo of the CA-2300. Tomorrow the dealer comes to take it back.
B&W is to be congratulated; it's a lovely sounding amp, with clean and controlled, yet dynamic, sound. Tonight I listened to a Beethoven symphony, and notably, the amp stayed completely composed when things got loud. I've found that some otherwise very good gear changes character as the music gets loud, and of course that diminishes realism. Sad to say, the cooling fan turned out to be an issue for me. After the amp was running for a couple of hours, the fan sped up, and I could hear it between movements and in quiet passages of a string quartet. I'm demoing other gear to see if I can get a similar level of performance in a unit with passive cooling. Thanks to all who have contributed to the thread so far. |

If the fan noise has become intrusive it is because you are driving the amplifier quite hard. As you like the Classe sound why not consider other Classe options that are capable of driving your system at the level you require without the cooling fans ramping up. Monoblocks if possible..

As I said earlier in the thread, my room is purpose-built and very quiet -- quieter than a couple of mastering studios I've visited. The amp is right between the speakers, and the fan in this unit does make noise. If I had a different room or listened to pop or rock music, I probably wouldn't notice the noise. Oh, well -- on to the next. I've figured out, I am limited to audio gear that doesn't have fans. Fortunately, quite a few amps fit that description. |

I can quite understand your dilemma, when I had an ARC SP11 preamp there was slight hiss from the speakers when on phono - even at low gain, it drove me to distraction! Since changing over to a Steelhead and monoblock Manley amplifiers I now have total silence. I can enjoy music one hunded percent once again.
Best wishes for your amplifier hunt. |
