Default Galaxy Grey Thor's Hammer pics

Here are the pics properly oriented!

First pic is finished installation

Second pic shows how well the AQ Niagara 5000 matches the XVX and Thor

Third shows new Thor about to go up the stairs

Fourth shows new Thor with casters still on dolly

Fifth shows a closeup with the new natural ports matching the XVX hardware

Six and seven shows the finished ends of the new Thor. The end on the right (seventh pic) was unfinished old Thor. Very nice touch by Wilson.

Pic 8 shows the new Thor in position

It was a difficult installation but the final pic shows a wonderful result

Thanks to all. It's been a long trek but it was worth it. The old Thor was a demo and while I believe it was working perfectly, I am very glad to have a new one to match the XVX. The new one definitely sounds better. This is no surprise to me. The system looks complete; and it is!

ps. One of the minor improvements we made was to position the new Thor as equidistant as possible between the XVX. The old Thor experienced a Maxx3 and Alexx, both of which had minor differences in location. I seriously doubt this makes any audible difference, though.

Best

Charles

Hi Charles,
Did you ever try other brands of subwoofers with the Wilson Audion speakers in your setup?

Personally I have tried REL and JL Audio models with WA speakers. I am not keep to explore with WA subwoofers as the design is passive (i.e. additional amplifiers are needed) and I am not motivated to add others components.
Currently I am using 2 pieces of JL Audio F212 V2 for my XVX speakers and I am happy with the performance.

It will be great to learn from you, especially the subwoofer performance differences between WA and other brands.

Thank you.

STC thanks for the question. The answer is no because I think the Wilson subs probably work better with their speakers. However, I think other subs would also work well, especially with Sabrina or Yvette. The key is the quality of the sub and the JL sub is a quality sub. I would assume if you went with the Subsonics for your XVX, you would be looking at significantly over 120,000.00 because I have about 63,000.00 with my mono Thor. A Wilson sub system is extremely expensive.

I was surprised at the difference the speaker cables made. Wilson subs need big amps even though they are quite efficient. So if you want the best result with your XVX, I'd go with stereo Subsonics. I think you would be very happy with stereo Thors too and save some money.

But JL makes a fine sub. So does Rel. I suspect you would be very happy with either.

Best

Hi Charles,

For the past 2 weeks, I read quite a lot of your postings on XVX and the Thor's Hammer and I enjoyed reading them as you write very well.
After reading your experience on Thor's Hammer and all of a sudden I had the urge to find out more on Wilson Audion passive subwoofers.
As my pre and power amplifiers are all Pass Labs XS models, the logical move for me is to get a Pass Labs amplifier to drive the subwoofers. Noted your advice on the importance of a good amplifier for the subwoofers.
I am very pleased to receive the advice from Mr. Nelson Pass that a powerful stereo amplifier X350.8 (Class AB power, about 1400 watts peak per channel into the 4 ohm load and not really much less than if I would get from the X600.8 mono block amplifier) would be sufficient to drive the WA subwoofers.

I subsequently wrote to Wilson Audio to seek more advice on the suitability of my room for a pair of big speakers with 2 master subsonic.

Within days after the advice I received from Pass Labs and Wilson Audio, I made the decision to go for WAMM Package and hopefully they would arrive end of this year.

Thank you for all the exciting postings!

STC, absolute congrats! You have achieved the pinnacle. I wish you many years of enjoyment. I couldn't be more pleased with my system. Buying the XVX is the best audio purchase I ever made. The XVX at 329,000.00 is a bargain. Of course I can turn it up if I want to but I have found that with my XVX and new Thor, I do not need to listen at loud levels anymore. Everything is simply "there" in a way I have never experienced before. My itch for a better speaker is gone. It takes many months to realize how good the XVX is. Top to bottom coherence with extreme resolution is how I would describe the XVX in a nutshell. You will have even better with your WAMM and more dynamic range.

I think you are wise to have plenty of power for the Master Subsonics. They will need plenty of power. In looking at the X350.8 "sufficient" is the word I would use. I would recommend for absolute best performance mono amps of about that amount of power. These subs are quite efficient as subs go and you get 3 dB over a mono configuration such as mine but with a WAMM system, I'd go with large mono amps. The reason I like the Thor so very much is I can't hear it much of the time. It is only when I am playing music with really extreme low end that it is heard. But I have cuts that require 1000 watts, especially movies like Aquaman, etc.

You will achieve good sound with this stereo amp but significantly better with higher powered mono amps, IMO.

Best

Charles

STC, if you happen to see this post, I tried to send you a PM and was unable, because you are either not permitted to receive them or have chosen not to receive them. Also, it seems a little odd that your WAMM announcement came in this thread or in the other thread: Wilson Production Photos. That's perfectly ok with me, but if I had purchased a WAMM it would be a new thread. I'd like to send you my PM.

Best

Charles
