Dan, I think long before developed countries are forced to feed the population with plankton, we will have government intervention to control the population problem. No one likes to be inconvenienced these days and we resort to violence to prove it given half the chance.

14th century world population after Bubonic plague and famine, 300 million. Current population 6.93 billion. Come 2050, estimated 10 billion.. How about another 100 years? Scientists estimate our planet sustaining about 2 billion people in balance. Also solar energy alone can not sustain much more than that either. We rely on fossil fuels to keep this many souls on this planet. What happens when they are depleted? I think we have a problem..

Indeed.

God's worst creation?

Our species has been nothing but greedy, destructive, violent and self serving when viewed as a whole. We haven't done anything good for this planet when you really think about it. All our technological progress that we are so proud of has not helped the planet, it has only changed it to suit us better and at a huge price. The millions of miles and trillions of pounds of concrete to build cities and highways that cover this earth, the pollution of our atmosphere, oceans, the cutting and clearing of the forests and rain forests, the displacement and loss of habitat for the animals, the cause of extinction of many animal species, the constant and never ending expansion, the over fishing of the oceans and consumption of just about anything we catch, kill, yank out of the ground, pull off the trees and bushes and can stuff in our mouths to satisfy our ferocious appetite... They say locust are bad???

We have been the worst plague our planet has ever witnessed. We don't behave like other animal species, we even manage to kill and exterminate each other for various reasons such as different religious believes, feeling of superiority or even just because we feel like it. We have conquered, pillaged, raped, burned and destroyed those and that which we didn't like over the years.. We take lives of others and commit terrorist acts because our views differ and we HATE. There is no other animal species with behavioural patterns such as ours. Perhaps only viruses resemble us in some ways.

The impact we left on this planet will be felt long after we are gone and gone we will be. It's the law of the universe, life can only continue on when there is balance and we have long tipped the scale in our favor and to our own demise. Divine intervention or simple coincidence such as an asteroid impact but more likely our own demise by our own behaviour and nature's revenge.

When we are gone, the 4.5 billion year old planet we call earth will go on without us slowly restoring balance of nature as green grass takes hold over our concrete jungles we have created and everything we left behind turns into dust of time. Human kind will indeed be a short experiment and just a blip on the radar of our planet's existence.

And on that note, I am going to have a cup of coffee and enjoy a smoke on the veranda as my bug zapper keeps me comfortable in case there are any pesky mosquitoes out there.

Serge.......If you have not read Stranger In A Strange Land, a 1961 science fiction novel by American author Robert A. Heinlein, you might enjoy it.

Man is the only creature on the face of this planet that does not live in harmony with nature. Perhaps we are not from here. Perhaps we were dumped here, or imprisoned here eons ago as planetary rejects from some other galaxy, with the original abandoned souls having their minds altered in such a manner as to be unable to recall their past. Having survived as basic hunter gatherers through centuries, and as we have evolved, our species now actually believes we are from here, but are we? Again, we are the ONLY living creatures on the planet that are out of harmony with the balance, ebb and flow of nature. Why is that?

Without reading the books you referanced can you explain how someone could say this? Thanks
