Default Standalone DAC ??

I was thinking about this the other day. I think it would be cool if they made a Standalone DAC, something like the D150, only without the pre-amp portion and let's say around $2k or less. Would anyone buy it? Maybe have it use the upgradable module like the new preamp has. Oh, and add meters (just kidding, but, I do love me some blue meters)

I know there are a ton of great DACs out there, but what about that gut that wants everything McIntosh, but don't want it integrated into the preamp?

Thoughts?

It's been the wish of a few of us for some years. I mentioned it awhile ago before I purchased the D100.

The D100 can be used as a standalone DAC. It has fixed level outputs as well as variable outputs. It sounds best as a standalone DAC IMO assuming you have a good pre.

I think at this time McIntosh believes all of them to be stand alone DAC's, especially the D100 and D150

All three, including the D1100 can be used as preamps or standalone.

Most DAC's out there do have the ability to either use variable or fixed outputs for flexibility.

A lot of high-end DAC's I've come across are purely DAC's with no preamp features. Bricasti (M12 with preamp, M1 without preamp), Lampizator (though you can have preamp features as an additional extra), etc.

I have an integrated MA6700 and from my ignorance I feel the phono stage is better than the DAC... So I have been toying with the idea of a external DAC.. The D1100 is too expensive for me. I wonder if something like OPPO Sonica DAC would be an improvement already..

I haven't heard the Oppo. But for about double the price of the Oppo, the Ayre Codex is a guaranteed improvement over the DAC in the MA6700. In fact, I find the Codex is better than the new and improved DACs in C47, C52 etc.
