Nice Review of MC152
McIntosh has introduced a new entry-level solid-state power amplifier in the shape of the MC152 – but it still packs 150 Watts per channel and sounds sublime, says Jon Myles
CONCLUSION McIntosh’s new MC152 combines plentiful power output with a sonic signature that brings the best out of all genres of music. It can be subtle and fleet-of-foot when needed – yet is just at home pounding out deep bass lines, crashing guitar chords or orchestral crescendoes. Not just a cut-down version of McIntosh’s bigger power amplifiers but a great performer in its own right http://www.mcintoshlabs.com/us/image...ber%202015.pdf |

Great little amps indeed. I have the 152 for my surrounds and the 301 for my center. Some don't like the fact that there are no mcknobs but I love the form factor for center/surround duty and they are truly great amps.

This is exactly what I am using the 301 and 152 for. And I agree about the knobs. These amps replaced an MC205, with no knobs. They look quite nice and perform excellently.

Curious to hear your thoughts on the sound quality between the mc205 vs the mc152.

I did the same thing...replaced a MC205 with the 301, 152, and 452.

There really is no comparison between the autoformer based amps and the 205. The 205 was a great starter amp for the price for 5 channels but I always had transformer hum on the 205 and the signal to noise ratio was worse on the 205.

Agreed. The 205 is quite capable. But the 152 has the autoformers, provides more current, and is quieter. Even though it is only 6 inches tall, it weighs almost the same as the 205 (76 vs. 81 lbs.), making it quite a heavy package. The sound improved across the board: soundstage, dynamics, details. I also feel the 152 provides 'insurance' in case anything were to happen to the MC402 I have driving the mains. Hope this helps. |
