Avid Pulsus Phono Preamp
I have read several excellent reviews of the Avid Pulsus phono preamplifier. I like that it is manufactured entirely in the UK. It is a solid state phono stage preamp with a separate regulated power supply, so no tubes to mess with, plus Avid's reputation in the analog world and a five year warranty reflects well on the product.
Is anyone here using the Avid Pulsus phono stage preamp? Any comments on it's performance would be appreciated.

You may want to contact Jeff D. at Tone Audio. He knows the Pulsus very well. Cheers,

Dan....not trying to hijack your thread away from the Avid, its a nice stage and hear good things about it...... the Avid too starts its loading at 100 ohms and if its a concern for you in regards to the flexibility of the loading then something you may want to look into is the Nova from Musical Surroundings, one of the most flexible designs at its price point, don't let its moddest price fool you as it runs with more costly phono stages out there IMO.....here is the spec:
Built in California, the Nova Phonomena is a battery powered phono stage with incredible flexibility and performance. Based on the discrete, dual mono circuit developed by designer Michael Yee for the SuperNova, the Nova has rear panel accessible switches for gain and loading. It features 2 rechargeable internal NiMH dual mono battery packs with Smart Sensing auto recharge feature. All AC and charging circuits automatically disconnect when listening in battery mode. The Nova features a cool proximity detection switch on the front panel with status LEDs for changing mode. Specifications: Gain Switches: 40, 44, 46, 48, 50, 51.5, 52.7, 53.7, 56, 57.5, 58.4, 59.4, 60dB Input Loading Switches: 200pF/300pF, 30, 40, 50, 59, 80, 100, 121, 150, 243, 280, 380, 475, 660, 1k, 2k, 50k, 100k Ohms Discrete, dual mono circuitry Dimensions: 10"W x 10 7/8"D x 3"T Weight: 5lbs Warranty: 3 years Link to the owners manual http://www.musicalsurroundings.com/M...novamanual.pdf Last edited by Removed; 09-21-2011 at 01:59 PM. |

Jeff.......The Nova Phonomena sounds like an interesting phono stage preamp. It certainly offers flexibility, although I am not sure about the battery power. Even the battery powered Nagra phono stage has been said to have some dynamic range restrictions when compared to phono stages with a more robust continuous power supply.
I am not unhappy with the performance of the moving coil phono stage in my C2300. There is a lot to like about it. I am just researching what else is available up to about $2500 to see how their features and performance compare.

I haven't try the Avid.
But since 2 years, I have listened to a few other phono stages up to 5k euros which is around 6.5k dollars. They did not make a big difference to my ears with the C1000 inboard phono. Yes, they were better, but not in regard to the money spent ! Dan, I think that you will be disappointed by a separate phonostage compared to the 2300 if you don't buy a high end one.

Jérôme.......You may be right. I am not truly looking to buy a separate phono stage preamp. I am primarily doing research for knowledge.
