So, what is the US price the Special 40? I've seen it referred to as $2995 in the USA, but a b&m dealer in the Bay Area is listing them for $3995.

That's what I thought. Knowing this retailer, though, I am not surprised at their behavior.

All I have to say is the Special 40 is truly something special. I'd never owned or listened to Dynaudio before, but from online reviews I had to take a listen. I've just had my first kid and have been loosing time with the main living room system. Apparently, the wife and baby girl like music too. Got a pair in the grey for the bedroom system, driving them with a Rotal RA-1592 just magic.

Listened at the dealer vs a set of B&W 700 bookshelf and was not impressed. My wife was pregnant at the time and as soon as the Dynaudio were put on the baby started dancing and kicking. So even still in the womb she knew they were special!

Here is another very favorable review which includes measurements of the Special Forty:

https://www.dynaudio.com/media/6622/dynaudio-s40-e.pdf

Note the on axis frequency response of +/- 1.5 db from 300 Hz up to 10k Hz! Very smooth indeed and when you listen that is what you hear as well.. a very balanced and refined speaker.

I bought a pair (grey birch) and have been breaking them in for a few weeks now. I am used to the classic Spendor sound (BC1, SP3/1P, SP1/2) and these Special Forty's have a beautiful midrange that makes me feel like I'm not missing anything. The Forty's are also very agile and fast especially in the bass notes. I am using Rogue Audio's RP5 preamp with Brimar 12AU7 tubes and the Rogue Stereo 100 amp for amplification. I also have a small REL sub I am using for the low end which is an excellent combo with the 40's. My listening room is approximately 13 X 15'.

I have also owned the Dynaudio Contour 1.3mkii bookshelf speakers in the past but sold those several years ago.

So far so good with the Forty's and a BIG thumbs up.

-Paul

Auditioning these right now with a a Schitt Yggy/McIntosh C22 II/MC275 VI front end. They are very, very good. Very transparent and musical, with quick and articulate bass, extended highs and a midrange with great presence. Having spent several days trying to place C20s, I find these a more rewarding listen overall, at least with my gear and in a modest room.
