Well, I got rid of the hum. Unplugged Mr T from the Belkin PF60, and plugged it (him?) to a second socket on the same double outlet to which the Belkin is connected, and hum totally disappeared. However this means the precious green boxes now don't have overload/surge protection other than the switchboard RCD so I will need to do something about that!
Thanks for the help ... will also get a cheater and test that option out of interest.
May I ask what else was plugged into the Belkin? I dont think the Belkin is the root issue; it is likely some other component plugged into the Belkin that is connected to another component via HDMI (or some cable).....

Example : Belkin has DVD player plugged into it. That DVD player has a HDMI that connects to your HDTV which is plugged into a different outlet....

Josh, the example you give does exist exactly in my setup! ... Belkin has CDP, DVDR, BluRay recorder, media server, DAC, and digital (cable) decoder all plugged into it (and also used to have Mr T) and yes, the TV is plugged into a different outlet along with laptop power supply, computer printer, cordless phone charger etc. So you are probably right to suggest it is not the Belkin's fault. I really need to understand the whole area of ground loops and equipment earthing better than I do at present!

Join the club brother...i'm very knowledge deficient in this area as well.

looks like you're on the right path though with expert help as is customary of the fine AA folks.

I have subwoofer hum as well. I just purchased a couple of Ebtech HumX
ground lifters (similar to a cheater plug but supposedly safer and far more expensive). I will try to install them on the weekend and will report back.
I think I am leaning towards having 2 completely seperate systems. One for the
TV and home theater stuff, and another just for analog music.
If you are worried about surge protection try installing a whole house surge protector. I installed one myself in the main panel for under $200

A while back I had a ground loop hum that seemed unfixable after re-working part of my system.

The solution was actually simple, but took a week of fiddling and speaking to several people for about ten hours to figure out.

The chassis of the components need to be grounded together - this is NOT the same as plugging everything into the same outlet, which did NOT solve the hum problem.

All you need to do is take a wire - any light weight wire will do - and connect it to a screw on the chassis of each of the components - usually the various amplifiers, but can be any or all the components. Easy to do and effectively solved my problem.
