This is referred to as clipping distortion which consists of high frequency components, and that is why it usually results in a blown tweeter driver.
Thanks, that makes sense. Hopefully that is not something to worry about with Mcintosh amps and others with the clipping protection I would think.

Clipping protection effectively rounds off the sharp edges of the clipped waveform, reducing the likelihood of driver damage from the distortion. It does not completely eliminate the possibility though, and that's why you're better off using a higher powered amp if you are pushing your amp to its limit. An amp with adequate power for a given speaker load and desired volume level will be able to reproduce the waveform cleanly without producing these damaging distortion components.

The dome was shattered. I'm 99.5% sure it happened during my move.

Thanks for the data on replacements guys.

That makes sense, since a driver that is blown by clipping distortion would have its voice coil melted but it's not likely to result in a shattered dome.

yeah no question a 200w amp pushed hard will clip with the big B&Ws. "pushed hard" of course is relative...in my case, I was driving it loud enough from upstairs to hear the system downstairs, which is where i physically was. that volume, however, would have been way too loud from a normal listening position, for any sane person that wasn't half deaf. So a 200w amp would work with these speakers but you just can't get carried away with the volume, and do unusual things like i did.
