Requesting opinions on room treatment
Hi All,
I'm looking to lightly treat my 2 channel listening area. Please see the picture for an idea about the layout but the basics are that it's a fairly large area that is oddly shaped. Opinions welcomed and appreciated!! Thank you In the picture the red "star" shapes to the left and right of the speakers are planned to be diffusers. the red hexagon shapes behind the speakers are planned bass traps. The orange shapes are couches and the arrows show the most common listening position. black are speakers, green are amps. I have a smidge of comb filtering and echo.. it's not bad but the sound sometimes seems unbalanced and this is the reason for looking at room treatment to bring it into balance System components: TT - VPI Prime Signature Preamp - McIntosh C1100 Amps - McIntosh MC2301's Speakers - Wilson Audio Sabrina's Cables - Transparent Super (balanced) side note - I live in FL and the walls are CBS on the outside. Attic is treated with spray foam (open cell). |

I called GIK acoustics and sent them a similar drawing (plus pics). They came back with a starting point which has made the room sound much better. I can always add more in the future.

the usual first rule of thumb..........corner bass trapping and treat (absorption) first point of reflection.
As for your diffusor placement.....why ? As for bass trapping behind speakers ? corners first IMO |

"Sound Reproduction: The Acoustics and Psychoacoustics of Loudspeakers and Rooms" by Dr. Floyd Toole, Third edition.
https://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/sou...YaArSAEALw_wcB You may be surprised how little you really need. Places that sell acoustic treatment (like GIK and Real Traps) want to sell you lots of acoustic treatment, what a surprise. Eliminate the red "star" shapes to the left and right of the speakers, that's not where diffusion goes and bass traps go in corners, not behind speakers. Old school concept is LEDE and RFZ (Live End Dead End and Reflection Free Zone) which is what most acoustic treatment guys want to sell you. Don't start buying stuff until you read the book. Home systems are not recording control rooms. And, first off, your speakers should be on the short wall firing down the long wall. Last edited by Rex Anderson; 04-13-2018 at 10:34 PM. |
