Phono Stage
Hi Everyone
Need some advice. I have a VPI Scout 2 with JMW9 and Sumiko Blue Point Special Evo III cartridge. I had been running off the phono stage built in my Levinson 326S preamp. I've just recently moved to a Classe CP-800 pre which doesnt have the phono stage fitted. Should I continue the Classes phono card route or would I benefit more with an external phono preamp. If the latter, any recommendations as I havent thought about it until now. Rgds D |

I have the No 326s as well and recently purchased a pre-loved Audio Research PH8 to pair with my VPI Prime and Soundsmith Zephyr Cartridge and all I can say is OMG!!! Generally from my experience (there are exeptions) an outboard phono stage is going to sound far better than most built in phono stages ... but it adds another box and more $$$ for sure. Good Luck!

I would say with a Scout and blue point I would either just use the internal or get something like a lehmann black cube SE. Unless you are wanting to upgrade the table in the future and want to future proof the phono stage it would be silly to invest much more than that due to the price ratio between the table/cart/phono.

I bought the VPI to try vinyl and given I had the phono card on the 326s, it was a good entry point. I don't want to go nuts with a new phono stage so keeping cost in perspective is key. My VPI dealer is recommending Sound Smith so will check it out but the Lehman has been on my radar.

Fremer did a digital file, blind shootout between a few high priced ones and the lehmann. Black cube came in second while his 100k one came in first lol.

The Lehman SE model looks very nice. If in that price range, I had a Musical Surroundings Nova, which is battery powered (automatically recharges, when needed) and is about the quietest phono preamp I've heard.

Hi guys,
I purchased a Lehman SE II as it was on sale and its quite stunning. Great bang for the buck. A couple of quick questions, can i leave it permanently on and do you guys have any cable recommendations? Last edited by jumpman; 12-27-2016 at 10:33 PM. |

As far as keeping it powered up it will sound its best when left on continuously and draws only a minimal amount of power. If you're going to be away for an extended period or if you're having thunderstorms you'd be well advised to power it down. Enjoy it in the best of health!

Congrats. A good choice. And we like pic's.
Talk to our host, Masterlu (Ivan), about his recommendations. Am running the WW 7 Gold as my phono cables and am very pleased. Ivan will 'hook you up'.
