Default 13 Reasons Why

Wow, this is an emotionally wrenching series from Netflix about a 17 year old girl who commits suicide. She recorded a series of tapes that addresses the people she blames for her action, so a fair amount is told via flashback with her voice-over. It's unflinching in its portrayal of bullying, has strong language, and some sexual material, so it may not be to everyone's taste, but I find it quite gripping.

Sounds like a story that needs to be told.

I'm going to disagree. From several discussions I have heard on the topic whenever books, movies etc cover this topic many troubled Teenagers see it is a the easy way out and are pushed over the edge. IMHO parents better know their teen aged children well before they allow them to watch this.

I can assure you that the devastation her suicide inflicts on her family and friends does not make suicide seem "easy" to anyone with a conscience. I've also read comments that say it makes suicide look "cool." Again, very far from the truth--at least in the 8 episodes that I have seen. The girl in question is so sweet, smart, beautiful, charming--it's just really hard to watch at times and to see how she was treated at school. As Masterlu said, it needs to be told.

The writer/director do a fantastic job of integrating the past and present.

Gail and I watched the entire series binge style over a two day period a couple of weeks ago.

It was WAY too long and got boring after a while because it got so repetitious.

I haven't seen the series.
But I've read in our newspaper a serious warning for parents not to let their children of 12-14 years watch this without guidance.

Thanks for the information. The show is on the list for my wife and I to watch. I would like to make a comment on the issue of bullying. IMHO, bullying whether physical or virtual (social media) for adolescents is at a minimum an attack on their reputation and a maximum a direct threat on their safety. If the adolescent has no tangible support system such as a stable and/or healthy family or home environment, the adolescent is at risk and suicide becomes an option. The adolescent is dealing with multiple issues at this age and their "job" at this age is school so to speak. The adolescent can not just simply "change jobs" and go to another school system. Therefore the adolescent feels trapped and that can lead to emotions of fear and impending despair. How the adolescent manages these emotions can lead to a bad outcome if that support system does not exist for the adolescent. A difficult problem and I just wanted to share my thoughts.

Regards

I watched the 9th episode last night and it came with a disclaimer that due to the graphic sexual assault depicted, it was not recommended for children. That's the only episode so far with a specific warning. The entire show is rated MA, so that should be a clue that it isn't for kids! However, since bullying is so pervasive, I think young teens should watch it.

As a former teacher, I can say I'm glad that I rarely had to deal with such obnoxious teens! Also, my school was much more pro-active about suicide prevention, drug/alcohol abuse, bullying, etc., and did a far better job at monitoring dances. I didn't see a single adult present at the one dance they've shown. I realize this is a fictional story, but it's illegal to have unmonitored dances. If I were young and considering a career, this show would dissuade me from becoming a teacher! (Or maybe being a parent, too!)

I finished the series, and for the life of me (and my wife), I cannot fathom how anyone could think this series glorifies suicide, rape, or bullying. Her suicide scene was especially horrifying. I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't gotten that far, but believe me, it was not glamorous! Her death scene made both of us reel with revulsion. This episode also came with a warning about the graphic sexual scenes and violence, both of which were well deserved.

Agree- big controversy over this program here in New Zealand- we have a terrible teen suicide rate.

I watched the 1st episode- got half way through then turned it off- would NOT want my teen girls to watch this program.

Truly aweful.
