I've listened to a few uber expensive TT's (Clearaudio Statement, Continuum, ONDOF). To me one of the best price to performance TT is the Grand Prix Audio Monaco with a Tri-Planar arm. Tough to beat.

For my money the best TT I've ever heard was the Danish Bergmann Sindre with its linear air bearing arm and the Miyajima Shilabe on needle duties. I think it is about $20,000 in the US. I think it was fed into an Allaerts phono stage of some sort and thence to Einstein amps and Bastani open baffles.

I have a Verus rim drive modded Clearaudio with a linear tracker, a Kuzma and an old 401, among other TTs. I listened to the Shilabe on my Clearaudio and then heard the Bergmann. My TT is no slouch but...I promised myself that when I stopped paying school fees, I'd be getting myself one. It just seemed to do everything right from deep to high.

There is a review here: Bergmann Sindre Turntable Review.

John

Happy to be of service.

I see that you are in the UK. I'm in Hampstead.

You signature says you have the Whest RDT SE. Mine is the stock RDT and even that made my eyes water when I bought it! But I'm very happy with it - very quiet and great bass. Have you compared the stock RDT with the SE?

Best

Peter

Clearaudio statement was an experience.
Second best was Spiral groove 1.1.

You can !
I heard the RP6 with an Apheta on top of the line Rega electronics and speakers and it was as good as it can be.

I'm very committed to records (LPs), and some years ago, I decided that, rather than continuing to upgrade, I would bite the bullet, and buy the best turntable I could afford, without completely upsetting my household budget.

So, in 2001, I purchased a Basis Debut V TT, with vacuum hold-down. About 12 K at the time, (Current signature version is something over 20K and looks exactly the same) and installed a Graham tonearm with the Graham Nightingale cartridge.

And, if you look at my "systems" below, you will note that that turntable is still there, plugging away, and so far as I am concerned, the next change in that particular item will be by my executors.

At the time, the Basis was the best I'd ever heard and, with a couple of factory updates over the past 13 years, It is still the best I've experienced. Of course I do avoid going out to listen to any more modern tables that are reputed to sound better .. . . I ain't gonna tempt fate!

I guess what I am saying is - if you can afford to buy a really good one to start, you may well never have to buy again.

I'm still perfectly satisfied after 13 + years.

Julian : excellent post !
The Basis is indeed one of the best TT in the world, especially with the Graham arm.
