i am assuming that the SUB model might be more for adding a sub to complement floor-standing speakers which can go very low. for complementing bookshelves, STD should be sufficient?

anyway, what i really want to ask: is there any difference is quality between the SUB and STD version if i intend to set the cutoff frequency between 80 - 120?

Hi,

No differences other than crossover points.

In reading the Bryston 10B Sub literature, it appears that the XLR connections do not use the conventional pin arrangment. My preamp only outputs via XLR (as far as I know in the conventional arrangement). My subs (a pair of JL Audio Fathom 113's) contemplate a single cable to the left/mono input (XLR) in each sub even when setting up "stereo" subs. Will the unconventional XLR pin set-up in the Bryston 10B Sub work with my gear?

i think so.

i am running accuphase C2800 into the F113s now. the pins of the XLR are also inverted. so just change the phase of F113 to 180 instead of 0. alternatively, can also do an "invert phase" on the preamp side if there is such a function.

hi all,

i just got my bryston 10b yesterday so will be playing around.

may i know what is a typical crossover setting which you guys settled on eventually?

i have a F113 + 805 Signature. Seems like setting a low pass at 70 and high pass at 90 both @ 12dB slope fit in the best. I am quite surprise as I though both cutoff frequency has to match.

anyone else using a different cut-off for both high and low pass or even different slopes?

thnx!!!

Hi,

The advantage of the 10B is you can in fact overlap or stagger the crossover points - every room is different and play around until it sounds correct. Usually you start with 18dB on the low pass and 6 on the high pass at 80Hz in both directions.

Then increase the high pass to 12 then 18 and listen for plucked instruments like double bass or drums - something with a great low frequency transient. The best setting will be the one that gives you the best transient response at the crossover point as that means the phase relationships between the Mains and the Subs are working correctly. Then play around with the crossover point - try 70 then 60 etc. The lower the crossover point usually the better but a lot will depend on standing wave issues in a specfic room and the power handling of your main speakers.
