Bodhisattva,David, Sorry you were alarmed. As I said at the beginning, " A little research tells me that Blueair is one of the best air filters..." I just Googled the info as I am thinking about replacing an old Honeywell filter that I haven't used in years. Actually, I was a bit alarmed myself when I stumbled onto the info that ozonation was used. I thought that had fallen out of favor with the medical community.
Thanks everyone for the understanding replies - I'm a retired postal employee who would still be working if not for an inheritance, without which, I probably wouldn't have any McIntosh... This talk about ozone and McIntosh just made me think about the 148 rubber driver surrounds in my Mcspeakers ! Those speakers have to last me forever!! - my forever not being as long as it used to be though.

Thanks, John

According to Consumer Reports, the Blue Air units: "While there's an ionizer for electrically charging particulates, the unit produces no ozone."

There should be no danger from the ionizer.

Hi John, it's all good. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Derek clarified Blue Air's claims of being ozone-free. Perhaps the truth is in the middle as they say? In any case, it sounds as though any trace of ozone is miniscule and well within health standards, and therefore of no real concern. The Swede's are very health conscious I know. It's good that you got a good roll of the dice which has allowed you to enjoy good music through your Mac gear

Myself, I'm going to stay clear of ozone production in my house regardless of meeting FDA standards. That's for 650E. I didn't look any further at other Blueair models- they might be different.
Apparently, IQ Air filters to a standard 100 times finer than HEPA - .003 microns as opposed to the HEPA standard of .3 microns ! I believe I read somewhere that IQ Air pioneered air filtration ~ 60 years ago..maybe that's home filtration? That reminds me of McIntosh. It was founded by 2 German brothers and the business is now in Switzerland.
In 2002, IQAir became the first and only room air cleaner to receive a H12/13 certification for its HyperHEPA® filters, normally only available in multi-million dollar cleanroom filtration systems.
Just sayin' ---- John
It does get 100x finer particles then HEPA. There is no doubt it's a good unit. It's also worth noting its overall effectiveness is 99.5% regardless of particle size. The effectiveness of the BlueAir models are similar.

What I've found is that it's very confusing comparing units because they rank them in different ways. Unfortunately the IQ Air was not ranked by Consumer Reports but I've not been able to find anyone say anything negative about it. It's the Ferrari of purifiers and it's priced as such.

I misread, the IQAir is 99.97%, not 99.7%.

Thanks for your feedback & clarification Derek. At their respective price points, both brands offer very effective and high quality products. Which one is right for you will depend on the size of the room, level of pollution or particulates in the air & other factors like whether anyone suffers acute allergies etc.

I ended up going with the IQ Air New Series HealthCare pro. It's has overwhelmingly good stats and there is almost no negative feedback. They also hold a very high resale value. Expecting delivery next week and then I'll update if it actually worked, how quiet it was etc.

"...how quiet it was etc."

See, all that money spent on an audio hobby was worth it if it means you have an SPL meter on hand when you need it !
