Beethoven's Late Quartets
In the April issue of Stereophile, John Marks makes mention of the Cypress Quartet's recording of Beethoven's Late Quartets. He waxes more about the recording process (state of the art) but enough about the music that i just had to download a sample. Wow. If you are a fan of these works, you have to have a listen, which you can do for as little as $6 for one movement. I recommend John's recommendation: the adagio movement of Opus 127. And do the 24/96 cuz it do sound better than the 44.1 (I compared them).

Thanks, I will check them out. I just got an SACD of Bach's Goldberg Variations, and an XRCD of Prokofiev's Lt. Kije Suite.

I thoroughly enjoy the recent Tokyo SQ's Late Quartets on Harmonia Mundi--superb SACD sound and wonderful playing from the Quartet.

After reading rave reviews, I recently bought Takacs Quartet, Decca 000387502 (2005). Did they rewrite the quartets or shred the music before playing? Unlistenable!
Now back to Amadeus Quartet Deutsche Grammophon 423 473-2 (1960, 1962, 1963) You read that right recorded in the 60s beats recorded in 2005. I am sure the recording quality is superior on the new release but I can't hear it because they have muddled the music so badly. Howard
