I can't comment directly on your question, but I run Netflix via my Roku device and use HDMI to SP3 and use SP3 as the video / audio source and switching. Very easy and cheap way to go. Of course you get all the audio formats that Netflix provides.

Easy. You can use the optical output on your television, or use the HDMI output over a number of blu-ray players or other devices. ARC is designed principally for sound bars.

I use eARC from my TV to my McIntosh C53 which feeds an MC452 driving B&W 802D3s.

Optical can't carry the same quality signal as HDMI.

Not sure about that. Unless you are referring to Dolby digital plus or Atmos or dts HD, otherwise Dolby digital and dts should be the same.

HDMI can carry DSD as well as discrete multichannel PCM.

Yes, that and more. For a good theater sound system, optical is not the way to go.
