Default Gungnir Multibit DAC Mini-review

What power cords are you Gumby owners using with your Gumbys? The ones that come with it or have you upgraded and to what?

Thanks

I have not noticed any improvement in sound with any of the three power cords I tried so far. If it makes you more comfortable using one of you favorites, there is no harm in it.

A Shunyata Research Black Mamba CX. I use one of these on my phono stage as well, FWIW.

To be honest, I never did a comparison; I was using my Black Mamba CX with Gungnir D/S since it arrived, and then installed it again when it came back as upgraded to Gumby. I never even unpacked my Gungnir's stock power cord, which I just remembered when I went to ship Gungnir in for its upgrade: I found the stock power cord was still in the original box, sitting there unpacked. LOL. All the stock power cords I've used were garbage, anyway....a Venom 3 blows them into the weeds.

The same Black Mamba CX power cord made such a large difference with the EAR 324 phono stage, I just installed them on all my source components and the preamp. The Black Mamba and then the later Zitron series have a noise filtering technology, and the big improvment I heard when using them was a considerably lower noise floor, improved bass, and they impart a noticeable "listening ease" and "naturalness: which I attribute to their removing noise, hash and grunge from the reproduction chain. Each step up in the Shunyata line brings a discernable improvement. I use Venom 3s for my Val 2, Mac Mini, HDTV, etc. It's interesting to put them on an HDTV; you can literally see the improvement with your own two eyes....better contrast, more vivid colors, more detail, etc.

Good stuff Stephen. At some point I will try squeeze some performance around Gumby with cabling/PC but so far it sounds great with stock and the few PCs I have at hand.

I use a real nice power cable that I've had for about 15 years - made by Twisted Pair Designs. I definitely noticed a difference using this cable with Bimby, so I just hooked up Gumby with it also - never tried the stock cable, so ..???? A lot of the "benefit" from using a quality power cable comes from the shielding (and geometry) keeping EM fields out of your signal cables, and Gumby keeps the signal cables farther away from the power cable - maybe that helps it be less affected by what power cable is used?

Kind of says it all in this paragraph.

If this were the Olympic Games, the Gumby would be the gold medal favourite despite being matched up against the best of the best. Other DACs like the X-Sabre are deservedly in the field of contenders, but the Gumby is like Michael Phelps – not always blowing away the competition, but always better.

Very nice and well thought out review. This will be my next purchase just can't decide if I want to keep my node2 or use a chromecast audio with it.
