Bach: Gamba Sonatas
Daniel Müller-Schott, Angela Hewitt
Orfeo (2007), via Qobuz

Excellent recording of J.S. Bach’s gamba sonatas, rounded out with C.P.E.’s sonata wq137.

Martha Argerich, "Chopin: The Legendary 1965 Recording". Very well done. Have been enjoying some very nice work from the lady pianists. Their technique is different than the men, but every bit as good and, in many cases, more enjoyable as a solo instrument.

Nearly 3 hours of delightful piano works.
I'm going to listen to this again.

Ideal while doing some work.

Wow, what a delight!
Sonically.
But also the performances.
Top notch.

Simply outstanding.

When I saw that John had posted a Caldara album, with Beyer, I had to listen!
We saw Beyer last month live in Bruges, and she was splendid in the Brandenburg Concertos.
This is a nice album!

Amandine Beyer, violin
Leila Schayegh, violin
Jonathan Pesek, violoncello
Jörg-Andreas Bötticher, harpsichord & organ
Matthias Spaeter, liuto attiorbato

Very nicely done.
I notice that I play this quite often.

I knew the Violin Concerto quite well.
But the Sextet was new to me.
It's quite good.

Korngold began work on his Violin Concerto in 1937, following his father’s suggestion that the main theme from his score for the Errol Flynn epic Another Dawn would make a good basis for a concerto. The work remained dormant while Korngold was exiled to Hollywood after the Anschluss. He resumed work on it in 1945, and fully revised it. Premiered by Jascha Heifetz in 1947, the Concerto is widely performed and recorded, and is certainly Korngold’s best-known concert work.
Widely considered the greatest composer-prodigy since Mozart, Korngold composed the String Sextet in 1914, when he was only seventeen years old. It shows his fully developed style and assured idiomatic writing for the ensemble. Andrew Haveron leads the Sinfonia of London Chamber Ensemble in the Sextet, and is joined by John Wilson and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in the Violin Concerto. © Chandos Records

When you consider that the String Sextet was composed when Korngold was 17, you can only be amazed...

Earlier today, while cooking and dining, we listened to this again:

I've heard these pieces probably 200-300 times. And I do not exaggerate.
I have many good versions of them.
Does this album add something?
Yes it does.
The playing is thoughtful, refined and energetic at the same time.

The fortepiano works very well here.
The fact that it's well recorded certainly helps.
