No, I did not buy there, he does not sell the higher end ARC stuff - in fairness to him, I am not his regular customer.

One way for a dealer to win over a new customer is to be helpful and provide some friendly service initially, even in the absence of a sale.

One way for a dealer to lose a potential new customer is to act indifferently - or worse - when the shopper enters the store. I've been treated that way more than once when shopping for audio equipment, and it guarantees that I don't return anytime soon ... if ever.

From the customer's point of view, this is one reason why it's useful to have a comfortable rapport with a good dealer or two.

My guess it wasn't purchased from the dealer otherwise it makes no sense.

Meanwhile, ARC replied again telling me that yes, it might be a good idea to change tubes first then decide if it needs sending back. I sort of imagine I am not communicating with the same person each time, the emails are all a bit anonymous.

Meanwhile, a prod to Upscale resulted in them replying with a recommendation to pick a different 6550 for the ARC than the one I'd picked from their site, so am doing this (and saving a few $ too, so well done Upscale). Hopefully they will get that order out soon and with luck, the problem will be solved. Here's hoping.
