Matt Haimovitz
Orbit: Music for Solo Cello (1945-2014)

A beautiful recording from Pentatone on SACD. A 3 disc set.

I prefer single disc releases which are enhanced, for me, by brevity.

Nearly 4 hours of music is exhausting to me but to compensate (I guess lol) Pentatone includes a free .Wav download of any single disc from their site with this purchase.

Anyway, this really is a fine album with selections as varied as an interpretation of Lennon/McCartney's Helter Skelter to Phil Glass's Orbit and Hendix's Star Spangled Banner in the mix. It never crosses into pop however as 2 Cellos generally do.

Interesting. Matt Haimovitz had a recording contract with DG 25 years ago but he had a fall out of some kind and now he does more more out-of-the-mainstream experimental work.

Biber - Missa Salisburgensis
La Stagione Armonica, Sergio Balestracci

Grand work.
Lots of choirs and musicians giving the best of themselves.
First listen to this, a recommendation from earlier in this thread.

Hume - "Harke harke" Lyra Violls Humors & Delights
Guido Balestracci
Les Basses Réunies & Bruno Cocset

Most enjoyable album from one of my favourite baroque ensembles.
Recorded last year in Vannes, France.

Default Bartók: Piano Concertos

This...

Bartók: Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 2 & 3 (complete)
Géza Anda (piano)
Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, Ferenc Fricsay

...disc sounds amazing. The music is modern and does sound a little odd, but these guys make a good case for it and it works.

It does indeed. Read my August review of these DG performances here. The more I listened the better I understood Bartók's genius. Anda and Fricsay are brilliant. Both deserve far more attention than they receive today. Look for their Mozart and Fricsay's Beethoven.

Default Music and Dance from the Viennese Court

I'm enjoying...

H.I.F. Biber and J.H. Schmelzer
Music and Dance from the Viennese Court
Gunar Letzbor, Ars Antiqua Austria

This is party music from the 17th century. Watch out!

Seriously, this disc is trying to recreate the music and ambiance from the Austrian baroque court and its dance halls. I enjoyed it and I wish I could have been a fly-on-the-wall during some of those 17th century parties.

This is a Chesky SACD and it sounds great.
