High tech, indeed. But, for that kind of money you can get a nice rifle. If I'm going to get close enough to a deer to shoot it with a bow & arrow, I'll use one of my black powder rifles (which have a useful range of about 3X that of an arrow).

As an aside, there was a recent bit on the news about a local town park that is being over-run with deer and the city fathers can't figure out how to control them. It's not like folks haven't been hunting deer using bows and rifles and whatever else for what, a few thousand years, or so. Doh........

For me, once I tried bow hunting, my rifle and shotgun deer hunting took a back seat.

I had the other bow for years, it was time to get something new. I keep them for years, so I get my money's worth.

Taking a deer from 100 yards with a scoped rifle is nothing like taking one from 15 yards with a bow.

The season is a lot longer for bow. It runs from September to the end of January here. Rifle, muzzle loader and shotgun all together only run for about 6 weeks.

Also, in CT if a landowner has 3 acres, you can hunt with a bow, you need someone with 10 or more for gun.

I have people beg me to come with my bow to get rid of the deer.

I'm going to try for a nice buck with a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 Mag. Any other handgun hunters?

They just started allowing handgun hunting in CT on private land.
I went on a black bear hunt one time with a hand gun years ago. Never saw a bear that trip.

One year, on one of those hunts, my friend had a bear put his paws on the ladder of his tree stand. My buddy stayed perfectly still, said he didn't even breathe. It was only a few seconds, but he said it seemed like he held his breath for an hour. He almost stained his pants, the bear moved off the ladder, and he shot.

Could have been you in the film. That was PA they were in/from. Good film. Especially for us VN vets. PA has so many hunters that the first week of deer season is something like a holiday (outside of Philadelphia, that is).

Will be working up .308 & 300 Savage loads with 150gr Nosler AccuBonds over the next few months.

I was not even a teenager yet when that movie came out. It was a great film though.

I'm not quite sure if there aren't more bullets that fly in and around some Philly neighborhoods year round as there are out in the woods.

I used to reload myself, fun stuff! Mostly handgun ammo though, 9mm and .45ACP. It was very rewarding to try and develop different loads and come up with some seriously consistent and accurate loads. Besides, going to the range and going through 300-400 rounds a session at great savings was very satisfying as well. The Dillon Precision Square Deal B was a great reloading machine. Have fun and good luck with your .308 and 300 loads!
