There are lots of fine-tuned weapons out there in various brands. I've leaned toward Ruger, not so much because they're better, but because I have small hands (relatively speaking), and the grips are smaller. I own a Ruger .357 Security-Six. But I would have to say that the one I fell in love with was the Ruger .44 Blackhawk. I rented this one from a firing range years ago, and they had done some trigger-action work on the gun. But that's the most accurate, smooth big caliber revolver I've ever held in my hands. The only reason I didn't purchase one was because of the price of the shells.

I would use it at the range. I wouldn't have to worry about concealing it, so barrel length, and caliber, is not an issue

I like the Rugers. I shot one about 6 years ago when I was on a hunt in Maine.

It sounds like you are planning to be a casual user at first. Nothing wrong with that. Barrel length and caliber are indeed issues if it makes the gun unwieldy or the caliber pounds the hell out of you. If you are mainly going to the range, a 4"-6" length is good. I would go with a .357 Mag that can also shoot .38 Specials.

If you like Rugers, then the Blackhawk series (Single action-Cowboy style) is built like a tank. If you want accuracy then you will shoot the thing SA. You could also get the convertible model that will let you shoot 9mm thru the same gun with an extra cylinder. That way if you later pick up a semi-auto pistol you could use the same 9mm ammo. Of course if you want a DA revolver, then the GP 100 is just as sturdy, but you won't be able to get an extra cylinder in 9mm.

At my place in the country, calling 911 means the Sheriff will be here in about 20 minutes. A lot of nasty s#*t can happen in that time. A home invader inside my place will get to leave horizontally, with all the lead he can possibly carry. No talk, just Boom Boom. Then I'll call 911 to have them bring a body bag, and write the report.

I have had to operate on people who were shot sometimes self inflicted . I always worry about a accident happening in the house which is why I have been slow to buy one. I do enjoy shooting at targets hence the pellet gun.

David.......There are ways to protect safety and still have quick access to your weapon. This Biometric gun case is just one example.
