For me, it will have to slay the performance of the BDP-95 before I'll jump.
Dan, the digital inputs should be very appealing to some, and if I recall correctly, your assessment of the OPPO 95placed it almost on an equal standing with the MCD500.... I'll be keeping my eye on it. And even better they are keeping the price at the same level. You just gotta love that!

Not necessarily, Dan. My Marantz SR-5005 receiver has a similarly-sized display and accepts files via its front USB input. Everything is perfectly legible from my seat (about 7 feet from it) and I can easily navigate the contents of the USB stick using the Marantz' remote, which is a joy to use and is even back-lit like the Oppo's. Only problem (you knew this was coming) is that the Marantz does NOT accept FLAC nor AIFF files, only WAV and mp3's... Newer models DO accept FLAC files, but still no AIFF nor ALAC.

This is why the Squeezebox Touch is king in my book. It plays EVERYTHING. If all goes well, and the Oppo does indeed incorporate a remote app, I will use its digital inputs to connect the Touch to it and I should be able to cover all formats and bases that way (I would save on a pair of interconnects as well!).

---Yeah, the main attraction, IMO, of the 105 is the digital inputs.

* Should we not talk about the 103? ...Or in another separate (dedicated) thread? ...Nahhhh, I'm just kidding!

I'm willing to bet the same, if not better than the 95'. Don't forget, the power supply and analog sections are just as important as the DAC chip itself.

Once again, just like in the BDP-95:
- no front panel display browsing. One still needs to use an external monitor or TV to browse through the contents of a hard drive or USB stick.
- no AIFF nor ALAC compatibility (half my collection is in this format... about 1TB worh of it!)

BUT... they did mention that they are working on a remote app for Apple and Android devices. Hopefully this will eliminate the need of an external monitor. They did not say when they expect this to be ready, but it seems it's been in the works for quite a while...

By the way, perhaps it's time we start a separate thread for these new players?
That is very disappointing.

Rock.......You are probably right about the digital inputs. Having the BDP-105 as a stand alone DAC with three inputs, plus compatibility with thumb drive hi-res files, is a big carrot for potential buyers. I still have unused digital inputs on my MCD1100, plus an unused digital input on my Olive 04HD, so for me the added digital inputs don't have much value, but I am probably in the minority on this position.

If the DAC's continue to be the ESS 32Bit Sabre Reference dual quad DAC's, the audio performance will be absolutely amazing. Those same DAC's in the BDP-95 are tremendous performers. We will see.
