John.......Cassette machines were invented in 1967 as a dictation machine. If it had not been for Dolby noise reduction, the special tape formulations for lower noise and better dynamics, plus the development of stable transports, cassette recorders would have never made it.

Dan,

1 7/8 inches per second and narrow tape are indeed a compromise for sound quality and I never thought about those developments you mentioned (along with three heads) specific for music reproduction (but try to find decent tape these days). While the analogy isn't 100%, I liken cassettes to (lossy compression) digital formats - it's an approximation, and serves a purpose: portability, travel, convenience, etc - but
you are losing something. But that doesn't mean the format isn't useful or fun.

I mean, wasn't there a line of "pro" cassette recorders-TEAC and Marantz (PMD-....) that were portable? Artists could capture ideas, the jist of a song and then work on it "back home."

OK, who here set up in a Grateful Dead concert and recorded?

I need to dig up ol pics, my Nakamichi Dragon was stolen years ago along with a 15 & 30 ips 8 track 1/2" revox deck from my socal apartment years ago. I was so )&^&*%! you can imagine.

One of these days I still would like to replace the decks, I have so much fun making custom mixes etc.

Rock.......The Revox B77 Mk II is an outstanding reel to reel tape recorder. My first Revox was an A77 that I had for about five years. It was a 1/4 track deck. The B77 I have now is a half track deck, so it only records tape in one direction, but man, oh man does it sound spectacular. Recording vinyl or CD's is no challenge for it. I have done some live recording with it, and that is where you truly appreciate the frequency range, particularly the dynamic range that a Revox 1/2 track machine is capable of recording. It is an amazing tape machine.

Hello, my name is Charles and I just joined here and noticed there's a few Florida guys here, some fairly close to me here in St Pete. Small world!

Anyway, I just thought I would start off with a couple pics of my newly acquired, minty fresh Nak decks, an LX-3 and RX-303. The 303 is especially mint. Not a mark on it anywhere.

Also, in the mail as we speak, I have a mint, fully overhauled Teac A-3300SX coming my way! It should be here early next week.

These pics were taken with my iPhone so please excuse the sub-par image quality. I really need to pull out the DSLR and take some updated pics.

Why thank you sir for the warm welcome. And thank you for the great complement!

I see you recently bought an A-3300S, the slightly older version of my A-3300SX. Just an observation.
