The DAC's designer has stated several times that many of the sonic improvements he's been able to get through firmware upgrades involve optimization of the code. Code execution in the FPGA environment of the DS DAC can be resource intensive, so optimizing the code size by simplifying algorithms used and making them more efficient is one way he's been able to achieve improved sound quality. Hope this helps!

It's true, Ted Smith has stated that a number of times. The point is that the Huron OS's uncompressed files are actually a bit larger than Torrey's.

Still loving it in terms of SQ in general and it is growing on my.

Still not 100% convinced though, and the (seemingly louder now) pops now, basically between DSD tracks makes a tad irritating for me. Not the end of the world but it was indeed less present and less loud under Torreys.

Love the sound anyhow and can't wait to give MQA a try (via Tidal) once PS Audio releases the necessary upgrade to the Bridge II firmware.

Don't the pops make it sound more 'analog like'??

btw... I am liking Huron as well.... There seems to be a depth there or something.... And I thought Torreys had a lot of depth.... I seem to hear more of the recording studio or hall with it.... Not sure - but it seems so... in particular on trailing notes of piano....

My guess is everybody here gets jazzed up when you buy a new product.... The DS gives me that everytime there is an upgrade.... It just feels like a new product - one that just landed at my front door.... Forgetting just about the improved sound for a moment -- The fun factor is thru the roof

Okay thanks Joe - As someone else pointed out I was probably looking at the compressed size or something.

Haven't tried mine yet. Soon

Don't think you'll be disappointed. An improvement over Torreys (which was already excellent) that's pretty much across the board.
