Default Here's why airfares to Hawaii could get cheaper

I'm in -- bring it on SWA.

Please though, no air refueling for direct RDU - OGG flights.

Best Sirs,

Bob

Interesting that SWA needs the 737 Max to reach Hawaii when Alaska already flies 737-800s from Seattle and Bellingham WA to Honolulu, Kona, and Maui. I guess it must be because they’re flying from Phoenix?

no thanks ..........you do realize that all they fly (to the best of my knowledge) are 737's....... and with that being said all 737's are based on the same jig dimensions (width) as the 707........originally designed for '4 wide' seating ! Now we have six wide with more fat assed Americans than ever !

Sorry, nothing more than a Greyhound bus with wings IMO !!

My initial thought about lower air fares to Hawaii was because of fewer people wanting to get any closer to the radioactivity in the air and water from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in Japan. It is still pouring highly radioactive water into the ocean and spewing radioactive particulate into the air, much of it making its way to the Hawaiian Islands and beyond.

Hey Dan, where did you come across this statement? Fukushima has fallen off my radar, thinking it is somewhat contained. Hawaii has been a special place for my family and me since I navigated nuclear powered submarines out of Pearl in the later 80’s, and yes we pumped our reactor cooling water overboard in International waters.

With so many PPM, it was understood there is no harm to the environment, maybe I drank the KoolAid, Dunno. Anyway its late, notte!

All right. Another 'nuc'. Spent all but a few months of my 8+ years in the Newport News Shipyard refueling (Enterprise '69-'71) or building (California '71-'75). Brother-in-law in Maui, but I'm OK with him getting as much radiation exposure as possible. Might even make him human.

I don't mean to quibble as I know people's perception of the situation in Fukushima may have more to do with the price decrease in airfare as opposed to the actual physical events at play. That said, the currents in the north Pacific Ocean brings waters off the coast of Japan to the Pacific Northwest and then southward along the California coast before finally heading westward toward the Hawaiian islands. So you're more likely to be affected by radioactive material in the water released by Fukushima on a beach in Los Angelos than you are, say, in Maui.

In having flown in a Boeing 777 from Tokyo riding the jetstream at 700 mph ground speed as we sailed over Mt. Ranier, the air currents follow a more northern trajectory as well to the Pac NW from Japan. Potatoes in Idaho are more likely to be affected by airborn radioactive material sent aloft in Fukushima than the pineapples in Hawaii.

Again, people probably believe otherwise and thus Dan's point probably still stands.

Best Sirs,

Bob
I too am confused as to why Southwest's 737 fleet were unable to reach Hawaii from the West Coast. They fly to LAX and SFO, among others. I took a United 737 flight from SFO to OGG back in August.

Anyway, I hope the increased competition really does lower airfare to Hawaii. I intend to visit often for the rest of my life!
