Christoph Graupner - Jesus ist und bleibt mein Leben - Solo- & Dialog Kantaten
Kirchheimer BachConsort, Rudolf Lutz
via Qobuz

The man who should have been Thomaskantor in Leipzig instead of Bach had to stay in Darmstadt.
While not attaining the same heights as his colleague, Graupner has composed nice things.
Marie Louise Werneburg is a nice discovery for me. She's a wonderfully sounding soprano.

Mozart: Complete Sonatas for Fortepiano and Violin, vol.2: Auernhammer Sonatas
David Breitman, fortepiano
Jean-François Rivest, violin
Analekta (2005), 16/44

Fine performances and good sound. Analekta is a small Canadian label that specializes in recording Canadian artists, and with some very good results.

Default What Classical Music Are You Listening To Tonight?

Ida Presti & Alexandre Lagoya ‎– Virtuose Musik Für Zwei Gitarren - Guitar Duets
Philips (1975), vinyl

This is a very nice collection of pieces, mostly transcriptions, for two guitars, by Bach, Scarlatti, Soler, Sor, Debussy, Albéniz, Falla and others. The date on the album is 1975, but Ida Presti died in ‘67, so it’s not clear when these pieces were recorded - regardless, the sound is excellent and the playing brilliant.

John, if you don’t know this recording, you’d probably like it.

I own it! Yes, it's wonderful.

Haydn: The Complete String Quartets
The Angeles Quartet
Decca (2000/2012), 16/44, disc 1 of 21

My wife bought me this box set of 21 discs for Christmas. I’m only on disc 1, but so far sound is very good and performances are beautiful: faultless playing, crisp rhythms, no superfluous embellishments.

Bach: Goldberg Variations
Murray Perahia
Sony Classical (2000), 16/44

This is a wonderful recording. Classics Today said of this recording,
“What makes Perahia so special, though, is his masterful application of the piano’s tone colors and dynamic contrasts to Bach’s music in a way that is at once personal and totally convincing. Artists as individually outstanding as Gould, Tureck, Koroliov, and Schiff have all found solutions that are equally valid, but none, I think, have ever made the music sound so naturally, joyously at home on the modern piano as has Perahia... Perahia has given us a recording for the ages, no doubt about it.”

This is delicious, isn't it Tony?
I'm also streaming it now (24/88.2 via Qobuz).
