Strange you ask that question! I went through the same thought process as well. It's almost double the price for another 10WPC.

According to Luxman, the 590 has many more upgraded components in it with some borrowed from the more expensive units.

To be honest, I am not that much of a sophisticated listener to determine a big difference sonically from the 550 and the 590 but both sound great!

If you are considering the 590, you might want to wait for the 590 Mark II which is supposed to be even better. I believe those units start shipping in January.

Thanks for the info Greg. I gave seen some used 590's that are only a bit more than the 550. I would rather have new but if the 10 wpc was a significant difference, I might consider a previously loved model.

try1256,

I am not sure where you are located or if you plan to purchase from a local retailer. I believe that Music Direct still offers a 30 money back guarantee on their gear.

Just a thought - it might be a good way to try out a 550ax.

I live in Florida. There is one Luxman dealer about 2 1/2 hours from me. Not exactly local. I have spoken with him and I will buy from him if I buy new. Just weighing the risk/benefit of buying a model up used for comparable money.

Plus, 36 months of zero percent financing. I'm giving serious thought to a Luxman, Krell or BAT integrated amp. I always like purchasing on other folks $$.

The L-590AX is a true balanced design.
If you use a true balanced source, you will realize a benefit from both the balanced circuit and the extra power/headroom.
The L-550AX has a "balanced input" though internally it is put through a phase converter and really an unbalanced circuit.
If your source is single ended output, go for the L-550ax.
