I did manage to listen to the D1100 driving the amps directly. I can say without a doubt that the major difference I noticed between the C53/da2 and the D1100 setup was due to the D1100.
If not for the lack of analog inputs, I could happily live with the D1100 as my preamp. The sound was textured and lush but retained all of its detail. The bass was very tight. It's much more difficult to a/b when you can't easily switch back and forth. And while I'm thoroughly enjoying the c1100/d1100, I would have to spend a lot of time listening and swapping cables back and forth to decide whether I like the D1100 direct or through the C1100 more.

You mean you don't want to buy another pair of expensive IC's to keep simultaneously connected so you can A/B? I'm kidding of course! Thanks for reporting back.
I run the D1100 as my preamp because I'm all digital right now. I've often wondered what adding an analog pre would bring, if anything. You have a sick system by the way, enjoy it!

Thanks. I really am enjoying it. Your system is rather nice as well. I'm sure the 312 is amazing. The 303 I use for HT is the first of the big Mc SS amps I owned. It drives the center speaker and it sounds great. It's why I became interested in the 611/1.25s.
