Its not the time, its the consequences if the firmware update fails ie a rooted Mac that puts me off doing this. eg https://www.audioaficionado.org/show...irmware+update
I'm in New Zealand and bought this secondhand so don't have the same dealer support you Americans enjoy!

Yes, thanks Deano.
That will be my next move if it keeps happening too often.

It is quite possible if this reoccurs again or continues to occur, you could have a 12V tube going bad -- software controlling tube warm up is not getting what it wants (voltage) from one of them & so, the software will not allow "TUBE WARMUP" display to extinguish.
Best Sir, Bob

It's bad enough when normal items in audio components fail, not even being able to power something up is unacceptable in my book; in McIntosh's price league, it is a disgrace. And this in gear that is relatively new. Were we talking decades-old equipment, it might be understandable. The situation is all the more exacerbated by repair turnaround times of close to a year because nobody outside the factory knows how to fix it. And if it fails again, then what?
For decades, McIntosh had always resisted new technology until it had been thoroughly refined and perfected to the point that such failure extremely remote. Unless McIntosh Laboratory gets its act together - and damn quick - I fear it will soon be paying a heavy price to its reputation, its dealer network and its loyal customer base. Once that happens the death spiral is inevitable. I sincerely hope the damage has not yet made it to that point. One man's opinion. Last edited by 62caddy; 08-09-2017 at 11:40 AM. |

First, every manufacturer makes the occasional defective product. In this instance, the user purchased it used. Caveat emptor. Purchasing used equipment does carry some inherent risk. I'm sympathetic to the owner's problem, but I don't see it as a "disgrace" to McIntosh. |

Sure...It's just that loyal McIntosh users have higher standards and expect a lot more than something being "DOA"... which kind of unusual for this brand.

But this component isn't exactly "DOA." It was purchased used. Who knows what its history is? |

The factory is swamped with equipment needing repairs - both in and out of warranty - to levels hitherto unseen at any other time in McIntosh's history. This is a fact. Part of this is due to the fact that nobody else knows how to repair this equipment, thus further burdening the factory service center. Last I heard, backlog currently stands at 9 months before getting to the bench. Last edited by 62caddy; 08-09-2017 at 06:19 PM. |
