Default McIntosh’s Flagship C1100 Tube Preamplifier....

Thanks Bob, excellent feedback. Sounds like I need to think about improving my ventilation. I was concerned knowing how cool my 8 tube C500 operated.

Hmmmm. The manual warning certainly seems counterintuitive. I can only believe it's a typo.

My C1000C runs a little warm too but NOTHING like my C1100T. And it's only the top plate and front glass that are hot. Not bottom plate or sides.

I currently have the T on top of the C. Initially, I had the C on top of the T but my setup now necessitates having the T on top based on a short cable attached to a top shelf component.

Again, thanks for the feedback, I need to see if improving airflow keeps the T cooler ..l will set up a makeshift cooling fan to see if it helps. Last thing I want to do is cook the life out of my preamp!

When I received the unit, naturally I read the manual. What struck me odd, and got my attention after having a C500T combo at a time prior, was page 7 in which it states "....do not stack the C1100T on top of the C1100C."

I called Chuck Hinton after reading that -- and so, placed HRS100's under the C1100T to give it an additional inch clearance from the C1100C.

You should look at ventilation fans if yours is running hot to the touch -- like you stated, my C500T combo was cool as well.

According to the manual, at least the impression it portrays; of the two boxes, the C1100C would be the warmer -- not the C1100T. I've never measured with an infrared.

Best Sir,

Bob
I use Aircom T9 Cooling fans on mine, they look and work great on my Mac gear. Have a total of 4 in play. These are same ones that are in the Marketplace.

Late model Mac processors also run extremely hot all the time; have a T9 on my MX150 also.

Unfortunately, the spacing of my middle rack, which the C1100 stacks rests on, is only 12 3/4"' which leaves about a hair less than 1.5" clearance, not enough to place the Aircom despite its slim 1.5" design. Sigh.

I think best scenario for me is to mount silent (if such a thing exists!) fans on back wall of cabinet right behind C1100T

I've been playing my C1100 for about 2 hrs now. The vent above the front tubes feels warm. The rest is fairly cool to the touch. I have about 4" of clearance above the C1100T and an open rack design. It's definitely not hot.

j3brow - I think the excessive heat you noticed may be due to your rack/wall cabinet. My C1100T/C boxes run surprisingly cool in my opinion...nothing like what you are describing. I have mine setup on separate shelves in a completely open rack.

For some of my equipment I bought a couple of 220v fans and run them at 110v. Quite and still move some air.

Version 2.02 is the latest. A Mc engineer posted he had made a new FW version to fix a problem where the C1100 lost configuration (on some units) when using PASSTHRU. I have the FW and instructions. Hit me up with a PM and I can send it to you.

This was buried here -- thought I'd acknowledge Tom's (w9tr) newest acquisition. A fine choice many will agree.

Very timely post Bob.

Earlier tonight I removed the C500C and C500T from their perches and boxed them up for delivery to my dealer, because the C1100C and C1100T arrived today!

Installation and setup was a breeze - basically just swapped out the cables and configured the inputs and bypass and everything worked.

Phono section is sterling - very quiet and more dynamic than the 500. The line stage is dead quiet and sounds exceptional.

The difference I hear in voicing is similar to the difference between the older power amps and the newer ones. Less dark, more detailed and lively.

The only issue I have is the supplied HR085 remote also runs the MX-151 flawlessly, so I'll have to figure out how to enable an alternate code set on the C1100 and HR085 remote.
