Your first audio rack how cheesy was it?

Saw a show on tv reminded me of my first rack painstakingly put together with wood boards and cinder blocks. college days,funky system, no $$ but a ton of fun. how about you?

Mine was pretty cheesy. I purchased a door, added four decent metal legs to it, then gave it a bad walnut stain.

My very first audio rack was actually a window seat in an old Victorian house in San Francisco. It was decent, solid and large enough to stack gear on. I kept my little McIntosh mono MC30 power amps on the floor behind the Altec Voice of the Theater speakers. On the window seat I kept the preamp, tuner, turntable, and a reel to reel tape recorder. That was 1968. Ah, the good ol' days.

My very first, was some sort of press board; eventually failed from the weight of my gear.

I would call it "cheesy" really, it was however inexpensive

$50 at a local Flea market.


Later found a wide top shelf ($45) and a second rack ($65) which I cut down a bit.


This Lovan set up I purchased before I had any gear at all but didn't think the shelves themselves were heavy enough. Plus the rack lacked flexibility.

I had the exact same rack!

I actually saved for my first rack…it was custom made out of oak – adjustable solid oak shelves, the “pull-out” top drawer for the turntable…smoked inlaid glass on hinged barn-door style doors…ugly as all hell and a total 70’s style rack but I still have it in my garage full of old stray gear. Back in the day it was around $ 450 – a ton of money at that time for me.

That was my first rack also. I even had the blocks painted some funky color! Glad I don't have a photo to embarrass myself.

Mine was cinder blocks, wood 1 X 12 planks and the lower row was a series of wood produce crates to hold the vinyl and reel to reel tapes. Basic, cheap (I was in the service at the time...it had to be cheeeeeeeeeep!!!) and it served the purpose.

Painting your cement cinder blocks was the height of good taste and class. I had 2 pieces of raw leather that I placed between my speakers and 2 cement blocks, my first speaker stands.
