I experimented with (bought) two tube testers (Mercury, HeathKit), I looked at the MaxiMatcher, and I looked at all the ancient devices folks are buying/using to test and "match" tubes before I purchased an Amplitrex AT1000. For simple testing (good vs bad, basic matching), the other testers worked fine.
Like the impatient over-the-top geek I am (OCD??), I found myself wanting to get to the bottom of the "secret characteristics" that surround the 6C33C(B) that my LAMM ML2.1 utilize. I've learned more about that tube, and tubes in general by using the AT1000. The characteristics of the 6C33C are all over the map (very unlike any other tube I've tested), "matching" is "closely matched", and the failure rate is high for NOS tubes purchased (15-20+% from my experience). The AT1000 unlocked the secrets. Operation with a computer is admittedly a bit quirky, but the Amplitrex works, the designer and builder of the device is as helpful as he can be, the AT1000 simply allows for more comprehensive testing with more options, and it tests tubes that other testers don't test (with adapters). It's worth every penny, IMHO, but hey, I also use a Shunyata Venom PowerSnake on it too! Best Regards, Brian Last edited by AMatters; 09-21-2012 at 09:24 AM.
