Dave.......I agree. Chris Martens' TAS review of the Oppo BDP-105 was a little on the light side with a noted absence of any technical details to highlight the stated performance advantages over the BDP-95. The review came across to me more like a sales pitch, touching on all the capabilities and connectivity options in a typical company press release. Still, I found the article interesting to read and it is clear the Chris found the BDP-105 a great value.
I am seriously considering the BDP-105 as a replacement for my BDP-95 in the home theater system and moving the BDP-95 to the living room, shifting the BDP-83SE in the living room to my office system, and shifting the BDP-83 that's currently in my office system to the bedroom. Then the Sony BDP-S560 in the bedroom will go out in my shop. A real music chairs of Blu-ray players.

Tommy.......You'd be surprised how much time is available to you when you are retired. Movies are usually enjoyed on either the home theater system in the studio or my two channel system in the living room. I have a 5.1 system in my office that I watch a movie on occasionally, but the BDP-83 that's in the office get used primarily as a source for my headphone rig. The Blu-ray player in the bedroom is primarily for Marlene. She enjoys watching movies in bed. She's watching a movie in the bedroom as I write this. The DVD player in my shop is used primarily for music when I am out there with a project. Believe it or not, all of the systems get use, including my vintage system set up in my travel trailer that I use as a guest house when I have overnight visitors.

Interesting discussion
I have an oppo95 and thinking of upgrading to the 105 solely to be able to take advantage of the external dac. The way I figure it is that it's a cost effective upgrade of my existing separate dac. How would the 105 compare to say the schitt ? Any views welcome. |

I dont know about the dac specific portion but I purchased the 95 for the 2 channel system, returned it for refund. It didn't hold a candle to the depth and realism of the dedicated 2 channel player. But in the movie room I thought it made a nice improvement to the video and audio over the PS3. So if you are looking for a dedicated 2 channel player I would try and stretch the budget. If looking for a movie room player Oppo seems to be the way to go. Can't comment on the 105 at all.

Tommy.......What appeals to me the most about the BDP-105 is the fanless operation. I also like the digital inputs and network capabilities. There's no pressure to be in a hurry to buy. Like you said, all of my existing systems are stable.
