Could not agree more about the downsides of MQA. If they win all of us consumers who prefer choice will lose. That's one good reason to continue to purchase physical media. The other is that it generally sounds better. Especially vinyl.

MQA: A Review of controversies, concerns, and cautions
Too much paranoia amongst us music loving folks. Record industry is trying to navigate this ever changing digital, streaming world. They will eventually find a system that benefits them. If it’s MQA, I say good for us. It’s a high resolution format, it sounds really really good.
The masses couldn’t care less about hi-res and it’s the masses that drive everything. What if a copy protected mp3 format became the only game in town. 90% of consumers would be fine with that. If a hi-res distribution format engineered for easy streaming takes over as the dominant format, I say that’s a win for us, the music loving quality oriented consumers. We now have access to studio resolution files of albums that have not previously been released as hi-res download available for purchase. That’s a win. And MQA sounds great. I now have the ability to listen to 1st unfold via Aurender or all the way via a 808v6. It’s a great option to have either way ...... streaming hi-res for $20/month with 10,000+ albums and counting 1 year after roll out is really amazing. I don’t care if I do not own the music. The benefit outweighs the technical fears of aliasing and potential lossy transmission (in my mind it would be a new definition of lossy as sonically its ALL there). We are in early days here. IF MQA takes over, it will be years and only if everyone has access to unfolding, not just us early adopters like myself.

Any business, at least public businesses, are constantly working for a competitive advantage:
- To lower their costs. - To raise their prices and grow their ‘volumes’ eg Drive revenues. - To beat their competition (into submission) by protecting and expanding their competitive advantage. I have zero doubt the music labels, the MQA folks and even the equipment companies are trying to achieve all of that. If not, they should be. I would be.

I don't really see the point in the argument that MQA is the streaming solution for slower internet connection.
Internet is getting faster and faster, and cheaper. At home, I stream Qobuz 24/192 without a hiccup. 4G is almost everywhere available here, and 5G is coming (1000 times faster than 4G!!). With already > 70,000 albums in hi-res on Qobuz, I don't have the least desire to buy a MQA compatible DAC, although I do stream Tidal also.

I live in a remote mountain area where the fastest internet I can get is 8 Mbps via ADSL2 and that will be it for the foreseeable future. So for a small minority (me) bandwidth is an issue.

While HughsNet offers faster speeds, it also has data caps and is a bit pricey. For 50gb per month it’s $100. I get 3Mbps DSL which is enough to stream 16/44 content from Qobuz and Tidal. If I want to have something in hi-res, I buy it and let it download overnight. I don’t need MQA, thanks.

As good a time as any, I guess, for this Luddite, a curmudgeonly geezer who relies on CD rips and purchased hi-res downloads for any music sourced via computer, to check in here. I'm not the Henny Penny sky-is-falling type, but I wonder what will happen when a master hacker inspired by Allstate's "Mayhem" takes down enough of the 'Net to render streaming the definitive performance of Paul Simon's "Sound of Silence"--you know, in the vein of Montgomery Scott's observation that "the more they overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."
OK, enough snark. At best--and taking on faith all the good things that have been said about it, while noting the critiques issued by skeptical industry professionals--I see MQA as a stopgap solution to current bandwidth limitations. Do I want to be locked in, equipment-purchase-, software-availability-, and performance-capability-wise, to a proprietary system, the need for which may be rendered irrelevant tomorrow, given the pace of technological advancement? The answer is obviously a your-mileage-may-vary, to-each-his/her-own. In my case, it's "no", even if MQA is all its promoters say it is.
